Hardware Analysis: Precautions for Bolted Joints in Mechanical and Electrical Equipment Installation

Bolted and nutted joints are among the most fundamental types of assemblies in the electromechanical industry. When these joints are tightened excessively, the bolts—subject to the combined long-term effects of mechanical and electromagnetic forces—are prone to metal fatigue, leading to loosening phenomena such as shear failure or thread stripping. This results in assembly looseness between components and can trigger accidents. In electrical engineering, for bolted and nutted connections carrying current, it is essential not only to consider their mechanical effects but also their electrothermal effects. If the connection is not sufficiently tight, contact resistance increases; during operation, this generates heat, which in turn accelerates oxidation at the contact surface, further increasing resistance—a vicious cycle that can ultimately lead to severe overheating, melting of the joint, and subsequent ground faults or open‑circuit failures. For primary equipment and busbars, parallel groove clamps, T‑type clamps, equipment clamps, and terminal lugs may all give rise to incidents of varying severity under such conditions.
