With rapid advances in technology, China now enjoys a competitive edge in the technology‑driven manufacturing sector. Today, automated production lines for large‑scale machinery can replace manual processes, bringing considerable convenience and saving substantial time. As time goes on, mechanized manufacturing will undoubtedly enter an even more advanced phase.
1 Background
As science continues to advance, the design of mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and automation has evolved from nascent stages through maturity to gradual refinement. With the advancement of electronic information technology, sophisticated electronic controllers have been integrated with mechanical design, giving rise to computer‑controlled automation that operates without manual intervention. The adoption of mechanical automation not only meets contemporary societal demands for production efficiency but also reduces the labor burden, significantly lowering the intensity of human work. The most immediate outcomes of using mechanical automation are increased productivity and output; more importantly, it spurs corresponding growth across other industries. Mechanical automation technology first began to develop in the 1920s. Over nearly a century, its progress has been driven by advanced foreign technologies. In China, however, the level of mechanized automation has fallen far short of replacing manual processes, leading to an uneven distribution of applications and a relatively low‑level industrial base in mechanical design. Consequently, China’s development in mechanical design, manufacturing, and automation lags considerably behind that of developed countries.
Accordingly, as science advances and high‑tech industries emerge and expand, China’s machinery design and manufacturing sector has fallen far short of meeting the sophisticated production requirements of these cutting‑edge sectors. On the one hand, this lag in mechanical design and manufacturing is evident; on the other, and more critically, the equipment used in high‑tech industries demands ever greater precision. Take the development of electronic information technology: the associated demands on mechanical design and manufacturing have reached a level where tolerances are measured in fractions of a millimeter—beyond what the naked eye can discern. Meanwhile, outdated mechanical design and manufacturing has become a bottleneck that constrains technological, economic, and social progress, whereas advanced manufacturing technologies have, conversely, emerged as the most powerful enabler of societal development.
(1) Characteristics of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and Automation. In its application across a wide range of industries, mechanical design and manufacturing demonstrates advanced capabilities that align with the demands of green development. It not only continuously meets society’s production needs in terms of functionality, efficiency, materials, and energy use but also provides robust support for the diversified requirements of cutting-edge technological advancement. Compared with traditional design and manufacturing, modern mechanical design and manufacturing technologies are primarily characterized by two key aspects: human-centered design and intelligent automation. Moreover, to fully satisfy production requirements, automated machinery and equipment integrate multiple technologies. However, regardless of the type of equipment, each system inherently has certain limitations—precisely why mechanical design and manufacturing must tailor product functions to both the intended functionality and the specific conditions of use. Consequently, intelligent and human‑oriented mechanical design and manufacturing no longer simply involve the crude addition of technologies; instead, they require the integration and application of technologies in ways that reflect the unique characteristics of each product.
(2) Advantages of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and Automation. 1) In recent years, the Chinese government has called for a transition from traditional manufacturing to high‑tech industries. Compared with the advanced mechanical manufacturing and automation sectors in developed countries, China remains at a relatively backward stage; consequently, domestic demand for these technologies is substantial. Moreover, domestic solutions offer more competitive pricing than mature foreign technologies. 2) With labor costs steadily rising in China, the cost of mechanized automation continues to decline as manufacturing technologies mature. The automation and intelligentization of machinery significantly enhance both production efficiency and quality, while enabling efficient, rapid output even under harsh environmental conditions. 3) When integrated with electronic and information technologies, automated mechanical manufacturing can leverage built‑in self‑diagnostic routines to promptly identify faults and activate protective mechanisms. This approach reduces the need for fault detection and maintenance compared with conventional methods, thereby bolstering production stability and reliability and substantially lowering the risk of accidents. 4) Increasingly sophisticated mechanical design and manufacturing processes are straightforward: operators simply input the relevant instructions, and production proceeds automatically. Furthermore, their multifunctional capabilities allow them to meet the diverse development needs of various industries.
2. Development Trends in Mechanical Design, Manufacturing, and Automation
(1) The intelligentization of machinery. In today’s society, the intelligent development of machinery is a major trend, and the advancement of mechanical automation technology has further prioritized intelligence as its primary direction. Intelligentization is not only applied to product design and manufacturing but, more importantly, enhances automation in the design and production processes, thereby elevating the technological sophistication of mechanical engineering. For instance, as construction technologies continue to improve, the demands placed on construction machinery have risen significantly. Consequently, intelligent construction equipment—capable of diagnosing and resolving faults through embedded intelligent systems—can substantially boost productivity. Such smart machinery represents the future trajectory of the mechanical industry.
(2) Mechatronics. Mechatronics refers to the integration of mechanical engineering with electronic and information technologies. Traditional mechanical design separates these two disciplines, whereas in the future, the mechanical industry will seamlessly combine mechanical and electronic technologies, truly achieving mechatronic integration.
(3) Modularization of machinery. With the advancement of mechanical automation and the growing number of manufacturers of automated products, developing standardized product modules has become increasingly critical. Only by establishing industry standards can companies rapidly leverage standardized R&D and production processes, while also laying the groundwork for scaling up the industry. For machinery manufacturers, modularization serves as a foundation for formulating industry-wide standards, thereby fostering a favorable environment for the sector’s continued growth.
